FRANCE ENERGIES MARINES (FEM), the national research institute dedicated to Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE), supports the nascent ORE industrial sector with the means and skills that increase competitiveness by mutualizing R&D costs, reducing risks and accelerating the acquisition of data and knowledge. FEM activities are founded on Research and Development projects based on a broad public-private partnership involving large groups, SMEs, regional authorities, advanced research and training institutions and competitiveness clusters, and with the support of the national Investing for the Future program. FEM collaborators are scientifically and technically involved in these projects thanks to their high level of scientific expertise. The headquarters of FEM are located in Plouzané (Brest area), France.


Job description


FEM is part of the European project DTOceanPlus « Advanced design tools for ocean energy systems innovation, development and deployment » (DTO+). This project develops and demonstrates a suite of 2nd generation of advanced design tools for the selection, development and deployment of ocean energy systems, aligning innovation and development processes with those used in mature engineering sectors. FEM is responsible for the development of three modules:

  • Site Characterization: processing of environmental data
  • Station Keeping: design of mooring systems and foundations of fixed and floating structures
  • Environmental and Social Acceptance: environmental and socio-economic impact assessment

Within the FEM R&D department “MRE farm optimization”, the candidate will be part of the DTOceanPlus team at FEM and will contribute to the development activities of the three modules, with particular focus on the Station Keeping module. The main activities involve the following:


  • Contribution to the development of the three DTO+ modules, with focus on the Station Keeping module
  • Testing and debugging of the three DTO+ modules
  • Identification, specification and implementation of further improvements of the three DTO+ modules, with focus on the Station Keeping module, by means of literature review and discussion with DTO+ industrial partners
  • Active participation to the discussions with the technical partners of DTO+
  • Writing of reports, technical notes, software user manual and documentation

Profil recherché

Required qualifications, skills and experience


  • Essential:
    • Qualified knowledge of mechanics, hydrodynamics or geotechnics
    • Numerical modelling of physical systems (e.g. floating systems, mooring systems or foundations)
    • Code development and programming skills (python or similar)
    • Writing of reports and publications in scientific journals
    • Scientific rigor and critical analysis
    • Be curious, autonomous, organized and pro-active
    • Appreciate working in groups in a multidisciplinary approach
  • Desirable:
    • Experience in the domain of mooring systems and foundations of offshore structures
    • Experience with design methods and tools for mooring systems and foundations
    • Experience in code development for numerical simulation
    • Multidisciplinary and adaptability to new problematics
    • Knowledge in MRE systems
    • Good communication/redaction skills in English and French
  • Candidate profile
    • Hold a Master, Engineering or PhD degree in mechanics, hydrodynamics or geotechnics
    • 2-3 years of professional experience in an engineering environment involving above-mentioned disciplines and applied to the maritime industry (ideally ORE)
